Outlander: Roger MacKenzie’s Spirit Animal (Speculation)

This is my last Outlander post for the year. The information in this post was originally written for an essay about Jamie, Claire and Roger. However, while doing my edits, I realized that it was not a requirement for this information to be incorporated into the aforementioned essay. I will be speculating about Roger MacKenzie’s spirit animal, which I believe is the seal.

In the Outlander series three main characters have been associated with certain animals:

  • Claire – raven (and sometimes with other white animals)
  • Jamie – bear
  • Young Ian – wolf

In contrast to Jamie and Claire, the association of Roger MacKenzie with a particular animal is not clearly stated. However, there are references of Roger MacKenzie having physical features similar to Black Brian. Roger’s hair is described as “wet and sleek as a black seal’s fur” (The Fiery Cross, ch. 6). The marriage between Brianna and Roger is basically a mirrored version of the one between Black Brian and Ellen MacKenzie.

“Folk do say,” he said, with surprising clarity, “as how Ellen MacKenzie did leave her brothers and her home, and go to wed with a silkie from the sea. She heard them, aye?” (Voyager, ch. 10).

Their marriage is also associated with a seal. The protestant minister who married them, David Caldwell, owns a chain with an ornament shaped like a seal, an object that accidentally ended up with Jemmy. It seems that Roger’s animal is the seal.
