In the first chapter of Drums of Autumn, Jamie is not sure whether to remain in Charleston or proceed north towards Wilmington. Of course, Young Ian and Duncan prefer to go north. However, Jamie is more concerned about sending his nephew back to his sister as soon as possible. Young Ian mentions that having him around on the way north is useful regarding protection against “Red Indians,” skunks, bears, and wildcats. Of course, Claire explains to them that skunks are not dangerous. Jamie’s reply foreshadows his encounter with the bear and the Tuscarora.
