Sansa Stark is probably the character that is not liked much by Game of Thrones viewers. However, I believe that might change very soon. I guess Sophie Turner will be portraying a very cold Sansa in Season 4.
Sansa is believed to be the only surviving Stark throughout Westeros. She is a great asset, a word that I really hate to use, but that is the way other characters view her. In the books, Sansa is disinherited by Robb Stark before the Red Wedding. Basically Catelyn and Robb were informed that she was married off to Tyrion, so what Robb did is justified in a way in order to stop the Lannisters in using Sansa to claim Winterfell and the Kingdom of the North. He named Jon Snow as his heir and he legitimized him as a Stark. Robb’s decision will have a repercussion especially concerning Littlefinger, who will believe that he has the only surviving Stark child. Basically he will own nothing at the end, and even though he is granted titles by the Lannisters, he will not have any supporters. I am a strong believer that most of the noble Houses at the Vale believe him to be an opportunist and social climber. The Vale are strong Stark supporters since Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon were wards of Jon Arryn in their youth, and the nobles are aware that Littlefinger has risen high because of the Lannisters.
The dragonfly seems to be a strong theme in TV Sansa based on a Westeros.org post.
This post is interesting in the way that people are noticing certain accessories in Sansa’s attire, something that I did not notice myself. If you are into the books, this post contains links to other threads discussing book Sansa, especially the Rethinking Sansa: From Pawn to Player threads. Just in case, if you are a big fan of Sansa, there are dragonfly necklaces inspired by her being sold at Etsy.com
I found two web pages that include strong foreshadowing for TV Sansa (and very likely book Sansa too since the TV show producers know how the whole story will end).
My favourite one is this one here from a Tumblr blogger.
Meaning of the Dragonfly Theme
This post associates the dragonfly theme to Prince Duncan Targaryen, known also as the Prince of Dragonflies. He is a character from George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg series, which detail events that took place approximately 100 years before those ones in A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones. I have not read the Dunk and Egg series yet; they are in my to-do list though. Prince Duncan gave up the crown in order to be with a commoner, Jenny of Oldstone. This is a strong foreshadowing for a meeting between Sandor Clegane and Sansa in the future. She is a highborn from an old and prestigious house while he is from small, recently-founded house.
The following analysis was made by a fashion historian, and it is a good read too.
Finally I am looking forward for Sansa and Sandor getting together again. However, I believe that Sandor will die eventually. The song called “The Bear and the Maiden Fair” is really about them. Book and TV Sansa originally believed that Southern knights were handsome and always protecting the weak and needy, and beautiful ladies. However, that was not the case, and it was the disfigured Sandor who always came to her rescue. Here is the punk version of the song and the lyrics.
